La Chupacabra in Today's World
The Legend Today
Many people have claimed to have killed La Chupacabra; however, after inspection, most of these 'chupacabras' have ended up being coyotes and wild dogs (Jaques). Groups of farmers will team up to kill the mythological beast to prevent the animal from killing their livestock. These farmers set fires to the caves the Chupacabras live in and try to kill whatever comes out (Saldana). Sightings of La Chupacabra have died down in the last ten years, and movies and TV have begun to portray the beast as a myth. Today the Chupacabra is mainly a scary story to tell around the campfire and a beast portrayed in movies and books.
La Chupacabra in Media
The most popular representation of La Chupacabra is from the Scooby-Doo! and the Monster of Mexico, which helped bring the Latin American myth to the United States. Guns of La Chupacabra, Legend of La Chupacabra, and Indigenous have brought the myth to the theaters in both the United States and Mexico (Schroder). Most of these movies have been horror films, however, some have been family-friendly movies. La Chupacabra is usually represented as the villain of the movie.
